Dr Michael Thurlow is a professional historian, researcher, published author and former journalist who specialises in researching, documenting and preserving the histories of organisations, industries, properties, places and communities.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Journalism, Master of Research and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). He has investigated, documented and communicated complex stories for both scholarly and public audiences throughout his career.

Michael helps organisations, industries, property owners and communities uncover, preserve and share their stories through rigorous historical research and professional historical writing.

A desire to enquire

Michael has been fascinated by history since childhood. His curiosity about people, places and events led him to excel in Ancient History and Modern History during his Higher School Certificate studies. Michael has always possessed what he describes as "a desire to enquire" and a belief that everyone—and everything—has a story. That curiosity first led him into journalism and later into postgraduate historical research. This desire to enquire drives his current work as a professional historian. He enjoys uncovering stories, solving historical puzzles and helping others understand the people, events and decisions that shaped the world around them.

Historian and researcher

Michael has undertaken historical research for more than 15 years. He uses archival, documentary and oral history sources to investigate and interpret the past. He has conducted research in major Australian repositories, including the National Archives of Australia, the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, state libraries and corporate archives. He regularly works with newspapers, photographs, government records, organisational documents, oral histories and other primary and secondary sources.

Michael specialises in identifying, analysing and interpreting historical evidence. He helps clients uncover the stories that shaped organisations, industries, properties, places and communities. He undertakes projects throughout Australia and maintains a particular interest in regional Australia and the organisations, industries and communities that contribute to its development.
